doctor, my eyes have seen the years
and the slow parade of fears

a little jackson browne on a monday morning never hurt anyone.

"These Days" is one of my favorite songs of all-time. if you don't know that song then you need to leave this site immediately. do not read any further. you should not be reading this sentence. do not come back until you have listened to it at least 12 times.

that song is pure greatness. perfect. beautiful in it's simplicity. what we all strive to write. a moment in time. a painting of words and music. a masterpiece of true art.

all that shit.

so my man, barry sanders, was inducted into the hall of fame a few weeks ago with none other than the great john elway.

let me just go ahead and say this now. the two most gifted, talented and exciting athletes ever to put on an nfl uniform went into the hall of fame on the same day. that is special. it is also special that i played with one of them.

you could argue that someone is more gifted or talented or exciting than barry sanders or john elway.

but you would be wrong.

as usual.

i also wanted to thank matt for asking about the song "the lighthouse keeper" and thus, starting the first ever "Story behind the Song" of the week or month or whatever. i also appreciate the advice from mp. i may take you up on it later..

but for now....

i'm going to do it as if it were an interview from rolling stone magazine.

"The Lighthouse Keeper"
with scott copeland

rolling stone: "The Lighthouse Keeper is a magnificent song. what can you tell us about it?"

me: "thank you, that is my favorite song of mine. i wrote it practically as fast as i could write it down. except i used a typewriter, so give it plus or minus ten minutes."

rs: "really?"

me: "what?"

rs: "there have been some who suggested that is was a 'drug song' and that there are several references to heroin. is there any truth to these suggestions?"

me: "no........but i did eat a handful of mushrooms right before i wrote it. does that count?"

rs. "do you still do drugs?"

me: "no...do you have any?"

rs: "what is your favorite line in the song?"

me: "what song?"

rs" "Lighthouse Keeper"

me: "i heard that gypsy prophesize of tearing flesh and the mothers' cries and the crimson flow of blood that would run forever."

rs: "that is cool."

me: "I know right."

rs: "What does the Lighthouse Keeper character represent?"

me: "i don't know......but i was watching a lot of joseph campbell on pbs and i saw this children's play with a unicorn that produced jewels with his horns."

rs: "what does the song mean to you?"

me: "what song?"

rs: "the lighthouse keeper."

me: "it means that i'm a pretty goddamned good writer."

rs: "you sure have a big ego."

me: "fuck you. this interview is over. get the fuck out of my fucking hotel room."

rs: "why do you say fuck so much?"

i then dive out the window and go crashing twelve stories only to land in the swimming pool.

the end.

see ya on the outside, know what i mean.

yeah,

fivehead scizzy
the end.
