play something with some funky funk on it...

something funkalicous.

something funky cold medina.

funkrageous.   funkabulous.   funktastic.

funky funking funkhouse.

yeah....

say that three times real fast and jump back and kiss yourself and do the splits naked on a mirror and see clearer and then cut a fart that starts the third world war before the crack of noon.     brace yourself.

so......

today i thought i'd do something special.    something for the people.
something to show i care.

but then i couldn't think of nothin'.   ---s. copeland

here's a conversation i had with my daughter, madison, at the lake yesterday.

madison    "that high dive is really, really, really high."

me            "really, really, really high...or really, really high?"

madison   "either of those."

it seemed funny at the time.

i finished a song last night.   it's called "the other side of hell".     sounds uplifting doesn't it?

here's a little of it...

Nobody ever seems too impressed
Never seem to pass their tests
I thought i tried my best,   but i guess i got it wrong.

Never once stopped to think twice
Lord knows i've paid the price
To crooked games, loaded dice, and gypsy songs.

damn,  i'm good.

don't try that at home, bitches...

i think it is about time for another lecture in songwriting 101 by scott copeland.

"good morning class...

thanks for coming.   today's topic is rhymes.

try to avoid the AABB rhyme scheme as much as possible.
ABAB is kinda boring as well.

try different ones.    AAAB CCCB is a fun one.    give yourself assignments and write lyrics for as many different schemes as you can come up with.    this is where you will find your favorite lines.   use a typewriter or pen and keep everything you ever write.

writing it down is very important.   and don't fall into the trap of thinking,  "if it's good enough, i'll remember it".    that is bullshit.    write it down.

use a rhyming dictionary for a while and notice all possible rhymes at your disposal.   after a while your brain will become a rhyming dictionary and you will learn to shuck the easy ones.

i use a rhyming dictionary very little now.   only when i'm completely stuck.

a thesaurus is a must have as well.

okay then.   i think that's enough knowledge for one day.   class dismissed.

always remember...

if you live an interesting enough life,  you don't have to be creative.

cool then,

scott
